Presidential Relations

I went rooting thru my database to see which Presidents we’re related to. So far I have us down for 5 (of 43).

Ulysses S. Grant is my 3rd cousin 4 times removed. Our common ancestors are Jonathan & Mercy (Warren) Delano. The Delano’s are my 7th great-grandparents.

James Garfield is my 6th cousin 5 times removed. Our common ancestors are Edmund & Ann (Tripp) Ingalls. The Ingall’s are my 10th great-grandparents.

Theodore Roosevelt is my 8th cousin 2 times removed. Our common ancestors are Guillaume & Adrianne (Cuvellier) Vigne. The Vigne’s are my 9th great-grandparents.

Calvin Coolidge is my 7th cousin 3 times removed. Our common ancestors are Henry & Elizabeth (Moore) Rice. The Rice’s are my 9th great-grandparents.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt is my 5th cousin 3 times removed. Our nearest commons ancestors are Jonathan & Mercy (Warren) Delano. We also share common ancestors in Guillaume & Adrianne (Cuvellier) Vigne.

I find it interesting that all my Presidential relations (so far) are through my dad’s side of the family. Whereas, all my Civil War grandpas are through my mom’s side of the family. What’s up with that?

Jonathan & Mercy (Warren) Delano

Jonathan Delano was born about 1647 in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts. His father, Philip De La Noye, a Huguenot, was born in Leiden, Holland, the son of a French Walloon. Philip arrived in Plymouth Colony in 1621 aboard The Fortune.

Jonathan fought in King Philip’s War. After the war, Jonathan settled in Dartmouth, Massachusetts where he marrried Mercy Warren in 1678. She was a granddaughter of Richard Warren, one of folks who came on the Mayflower to Plymouth in 1620. Jonathan & Mercy had 10 children.

Franklin Roosevelt descends from Jonathan & Mercy’s 5th son (10th & youngest child), Thomas who married Jean Peckham.

Ulysses S. Grant descends from Jonathan & Mercy’s 1st son (2nd child), Jonathan Jr. who married Amy Allen Hatch. So do we. Many of the Delanos and Hatchs removed to Tolland, Connecticut in the early 1700’s.

Edmund & Ann (Tripp) Ingalls

The Ingalls name is supposedly derived from the Scandinavian, Ingialld which means, “By the power of Thor”. Apparently pirates sometimes settle in the area they raid, thus Lincolnshire (on the east coast of England) became inhabited with Scandinavians, also known as Vikings.

A couple generations later, Edmund Ingalls (born about 1598 in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England) booked passage with Governor Endicott and headed to Salem with his wife and six children. This trip was probably on the Abigail in 1628. Although they debarked at Salem, the family moved to Saugus (now Lynn, Massachusetts) within a year or so. There they settled in and had 3 more children.

Edmund was mostly an apt Puritan of good character. But in 1646, his neighbors filed a complaint against him for “bringing home sticks in both his arms on the Sabbath day from Mr. Holyokes rails”.

Edmund died in March 1648 when he and his horse fell through the old Saugus (or Lynne) bridge into the Saugus River. Since there was a law that enabled folks to be reimbursed for accidents concerning inadequate bridges, the family filed a petition against the town and was awarded 100 pounds.

President Garfield descends through Edmund & Ann’s second son (4th child), John, who married Elizabeth Barrett and removed to Rhode Island.

We descend through Edmund & Ann’s third son (6th child), Henry, who immigrated to America with his parents when he was only a couple years of age. Henry married 1st Mary Osgood (our line) and 2nd Sarah Farnum. They were some of the first settlers of Andover, Massachusetts. Henry bought the land from the Indians with clothing and trinkets.

Several of Edmund & Ann’s granddaughters were accused of witchcraft. Elizabeth Dane was not convicted, but her cousin, Martha Currier was hung in Salem in 1692.

Henry & Elizabeth (Moore) Rice

The Edmund & Thomasine (Frost) Rice family left Stanstead, England about 1638 and immigrated to Sudbury, Massachusetts. Edmund & Thomasine had 9 children at that point, and had one more after arriving.

Henry was the 2nd son (3rd child) of Edmund & Thomasine and was born in 1621. In 1643, he married Elizabeth Moore in Sudbury. They had 10 children in Sudbury before moving to Framington, Massachusetts where they were some of the original settlers. The tract of land his father deeded to him in 1659 was in the wilderness then called, “New Trouble”. The place he lived in Framington was called, “Rice’s End”. Elizabeth died in Framington in 1705; Henry in 1710.

President Coolidge descend from Henry & Elizabeth’s 2nd daughter (2nd child) who married John Brewer.

We descend through Henry & Elizabeth’s 6th daughter (8th child), Rachel who married Captain Thomas Drury. Captain Drury’s family apparently were the Drurys of Drury Lane (of the Muffin Man song). Captain Drury was the first town clerk of Framington.

Both the Brewer’s and the Drury’s lived out their lives in Framington.

Guillaume & Adrianne (Cuvellier) Vigne

The Guillaume & Adrianne (Cuvellier) Vigne family was one of the 1st 30 Walloon families selected by the Dutch West Indies Company to establish a new settlement in New Netherlands. Both Guillaume & Adrianne were born in Valenciennes, France and they also married there. Cuvellier means barrel-maker and Vigne (pronounced Vin-yeh) means vine.

But being Protestant wasn’t the “in” thing with the king at the time, so they sought refuge in Leiden, Holland. A couple of years later, in 1624, they boarded (probably) the Nieuw Nederlandt or (possibly) the Eendracht with their 3 girls and removed to New Netherlands becoming the 1st colonists of the area. (Alternatively, Guillaume & Adrianne were on board the Tiger in 1613 when it caught fire off the shore of Manhattan Island and was beached.) Hmmm…I wonder which really came first…New Netherlands or Plymouth Colony?? Either way….

The Vignes began farming in Manhattan, north of what is now Wall Street, along the East River. Not long after their arrival, their son, Jan, was born (1st European male born in New Netherlands).

Guillaume died about 1632. In 1638, Adrianne remarried to Jan Jansen Damen, a co-owner in the privateer, La Garce. (Remember, privateer = legal pirate ship….so I pronounce this La Gaarrghhs-eh! ...and it means The Wench).

But before the marriage, a pre-nuptial agreement was signed to provide for the two minor children of Guillaume.

Having no children of his own, Jan Damen moved into his wife’s abode and apparently became very unhappy with his step-daughters’ families living with him and his wife. He petitioned the court to have Abraham Ver Planck (2nd husband of Maria Vigne) and Dirck Volckertszen (husband of Christine Vigne) "quit his house and leave him the master thereof." Dirck countered that Jan assaulted Dirck’s wife and tried to throw her out.

Both Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt descend from Guillaume & Adrianne through their 2nd daughter (2nd child), Maria, who married 1st, Jan Roos and 2nd, Abraham VerPlanck (this line is the Roosevelt’s).

We descend through Guillaume & Adrianne’s 1st daughter (1st child), Christina, who married Dirck Volkertzsen de Noorman. And that's another story.

Dixon County Nebraska

OK- this is how it goes...

The Bakers: The Baker family apparently migrated from West Virginia to Dixon County, Nebraska probably sometime in the 1890s (earliest record is circa 1893). The Bakers were merchants and according to family tradition, located their business' to correspond with the building of new railroads. Around 1904 (and prior to 1910), the Bakers had moved on to North Dakota. All three known children of Erasmus O'Bannion Baker and Lucy Ware follow this path. This includes: 1- Edward Oscar Baker m. Mary Amanda Forbes; 2-Augusta V. Baker m. James Bailey, and; Vernon August Baker m. Bertha Caroline Taylor.

The Kamraths: The August Kamrath family apparently immigrated to Dixon County Nebraska from Hinter Pomerania, Prussia (I don't do Europe yet, but I think this is Germany) about 1895 (also about the same time that the Bakers are migrating to the same neck of the woods). August Kamrath and his wife had at least 14 children, many of whom remained in Nebraska and today have many descendants in Nebraska.

Soo..apparently the Bakers of Newcastle, Dixon County, Nebraska and the Kamraths of Ponca, Dixon County, Nebraska lived about 10 miles from each other from about 1895 to 1905. Of course, the question is???...what else do the two have in common??

P.S. The Ellis Family lived there too! This is where Bok's grandpa, Watson Ellis, disappears from records about 1875. They came from Iowa. His widow and children are in Montana by the time the Bakers and Kamraths show up tho.

Yep, just in time for Valentine's, girls! Josh Turner's new release.

I first heard this guy at the Grand Ole Opry last August. They introduced him as one of the hottest things to hit Nashville in a while. Then this cute little boy comes out and starts singing, Long Black Train. I couldn't believe my ears! That voice comin' outta that kid!!

Then he started singing, Your Man. I've never seen such a reaction from an audience before! The women were literaling swooning. And just kept on watching, in wonderment...that voice...coming out of that kid?!?!? Whoooeee!

As Pappy O'Daniel would say, "Holey moley! This boy is a hit!"
